The Acropolis of Athens, a symbol of classical civilization, rises above the city. Its significance dates back to the Neolithic period, evolving into a fortified citadel during the Mycenaean era. The 5th century BC Golden Age of Athens, under Pericles, saw the construction of its iconic structures, notably the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea, and the Temple of Athena Nike.
The Parthenon, was dedicated to Athena and housed a gold and ivory statue by Phidias. The Erechtheion, known for its Caryatids, was dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. The Propylaea, the grand entrance, and the Temple of Athena Nike, symbolizing victory, highlight the architectural brilliance of ancient Greece. The Acropolis was a cultural and religious hub, hosting festivals like the Panathenaic Festival.
Raised on myths and philosophy, the ancient Greeks were always enthralled by female deities. The Goddess Athena loomed especially large in people’s minds, believed to have won a contest against Poseidon for the patronage of the city, by bestowing upon its people the perfect offering: an olive tree. The fruit provided sustenance, the oil fueled lamps to banish the darkness and the precious wood was used to build houses and ships to conquer the sea. It’s no wonder the Parthenon, Greece’s most emblematic monument, was largely a testament to the power she held over the ancient world.
In reality, no one really knows what came first: the city of Athens or the myth of the Goddess Athena. In many ways, the Acropolis is still a mystery and the best way to explore it is at your leisure.
